  18. Description of Working Group:
  19. This Working Group will extend the OSPF routing protocol so that it
  20. will be able to efficiently route IP multicast packets.  This will
  21. produce a new (multicast) version of the OSPF protocol, which will be
  22. as compatible as possible with the present version (packet formats and
  23. most of the algorithms will hopefully remain unaltered).

  25.  Goals and Milestones:

  27.      Done Become familiar with the IGMP protocol as documented in RFC 1112.  
  28.           Survey existing work on multicast routing, in particular, Steve      
  29.           Deering's paper ``Multicast Routing in Internetworks and Extended 
  30.           LANs''. Identify areas where OSPF must be extended to support 
  31.           multicast  routing.  Identify possible points of contention.         
  32.  
  33.      Done Review outline of proposed changes to OSPF.  Identify any unresolved 
  34.           issues and, if possible, resolve them.                               
  35.  
  36.      Done We should have a draft specification.  Discuss the specification and 
  37.           make any necessary changes.  Discuss implementation methods, using as
  38.           an example, the existing BSD OSPF code, written by Rob Coltun of the 
  39.           University of Maryland.

  41.      Done Report on implementations of the new multicast OSPF.  Fix any 
  42.           problems in the specification that were found by the implementations.

  44.    Feb 92 Submit the MOSPF Specification to the IESG as a Proposed Standard.
